The Maine Adaptive Ski-A-Thon: A Legacy of Inclusion and Adventure

As winter’s grip begins to loosen and the days grow longer, the slopes of Sunday River come alive with a different kind of energy—a spirit of camaraderie, perseverance, and celebration. On Sunday, March 23, Maine Adaptive will host its 37th annual Ski-A-Thon, presented by L.L. Bean and the Alera Group, a cherished tradition that unites more than 150 skiers and snowboarders of all ages and abilities. This event is not just about hitting the slopes; it’s about making a difference, as participants rally together to raise essential funds that keep Maine Adaptive’s programs thriving.

A Rich History of Empowerment

The Ski-A-Thon began in 1988 as a way to ensure that individuals with disabilities could access the joy of skiing and outdoor recreation. Over the years, it has evolved into a cornerstone fundraising event for Maine Adaptive, helping expand its reach far beyond the slopes. Today, Maine Adaptive offers year-round opportunities in alpine and Nordic skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, cycling, paddling, tennis, and rock climbing—all free of charge to participants.

Through decades of unwavering support from the community, sponsors, and volunteers, the Ski-A-Thon has grown into a major force for inclusivity in outdoor sports. The funds raised each year directly support Maine Adaptive’s mission to empower people with disabilities, making adventure and independence possible for countless individuals.

A Day of Fun, Fundraising, and Festivities

Participants who meet the $250 minimum fundraising goal are rewarded with a full day of skiing at Sunday River, a delicious lunch provided by Mainely Provisions, a friendly fun-run race, a lively costume contest, and an Après-Ski Party at Sunday River Brewing Company. But beyond the festivities, each skier and snowboarder plays a crucial role in ensuring that adaptive sports remain accessible to all.

“Last year, we raised over $260,000, and with demand for our programs at an all-time high, we have set this year’s goal at $300,000,” said Amy Bannon, Managing Director for Maine Adaptive. “Every program we offer currently has a waitlist. Increased participation means more wear and tear on equipment and a greater need for replacement and maintenance, all of which come with costs. The funds raised through the Ski-A-Thon are crucial to keeping our programs accessible for all.”

The Impact of Your Support

This winter alone, Maine Adaptive has served over 280 students with the support of 270 dedicated volunteers, delivering nearly 1,500 lessons at various locations throughout the state, including Sunday River, Sugarloaf, Pleasant Mountain, Saddleback Mountain, and Pineland Farms. The Ski-A-Thon accounts for nearly a third of Maine Adaptive’s annual operating revenue, making it a vital part of sustaining and growing these life-changing programs.

“This beloved event at Sunday River unites the ski community for a fun-filled day on the slopes while raising awareness and critical funds for adaptive sports access,” Bannon added. “This event would not be possible without the generous support of Maine Adaptive’s founding sponsor, Sunday River.”

So, whether you’re a seasoned skier, a first-time snowboarder, or simply someone who believes in the power of adaptive sports, the Ski-A-Thon is your chance to be part of something truly special. Sign up, strap in, and hit the slopes for a day filled with fun, community, and the spirit of possibility.
