Maine Adaptive Celebrates 20th Annual Veterans No Boundaries Program

JEFFERSON, MAINE

On Friday, August 18, 2023, Maine Adaptive will kick off the 20th annual Veterans No Boundaries (VNB) weekend camp at Camp Wavus in Jefferson, Maine. This specialty event of Maine Adaptive was founded 21 years ago, intending to serve veterans with disabilities and their families, helping them to participate in adaptive sports and recreation with their spouses and children.

“The first year served 3 individuals and has grown to serve over 50 individuals in the summer and winter, including veterans and their family members. At the time this event was created, opportunities for veterans to explore adaptive sports with their families were rare and hard to find.” says one of several VNB founders, Joanne McMahon.

One participating veteran shared, “This program is amazing! It is a safe environment where I can experience and share events with my 4-year-old son that I cannot do alone. We made so many amazing friends who face the same disabilities.”

Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation is a Maine-based non-profit that promotes year-round education and training for individuals with disabilities in order to develop skills, enhance independence, and provide enjoyment through active recreation. The organization hosts two VNB camps a year, one in the summer and another in the winter. Participants report benefits in all areas of their lives, from the comradery of meeting those with similar military experience and diagnoses to having time and adaptive resources to bond with their families outdoors.
