Getting Started in Adaptive Sports with Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation

For individuals with disabilities, the world of sports may seem full of obstacles. The obstacles can be transportation to events, the cost of equipment, the fear of the unknown and many other reasons. However, adaptive sports can open new doors to physical activity, social interaction, and personal achievement. Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation (MASR) is dedicated to mitigating the obstacles to adaptive sports and making these experiences accessible to all. Here’s how you can get started with adaptive sports and recreation through Maine Adaptive .

What is Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation?

MASR is a nonprofit organization based in Newry, Maine, that provides year-round adaptive sports programs for people with physical disabilities. Our mission is simple: to enhance the quality of life for individuals through recreational opportunities in the outdoors. The programs we offer are designed to foster independence, improve skills, and build confidence while encouraging a sense of community.

Why Participate in Adaptive Sports?

Adaptive sports aren’t just about physical fitness; they offer a wide range of benefits, including:

1. Improved Physical Health: Adaptive sports help participants build strength, balance, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance. Greater strength can enhance a person’s daily life by making it easier to do their daily activities.

2. Mental Well-being: Exercise in a social and supportive environment and can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.

3. Social Connections: Adaptive sports offer opportunities to meet like-minded individuals, build friendships, and become part of a team.

4. Skill Development: Whether it’s skiing, cycling, or paddling, adaptive sports allow participants to develop new skills that can improve their independence. These skills can also translate to activities of daily living. For example getting on and off a chair lift can also help with transferring to a car.

5. Boosted Confidence: Overcoming challenges in adaptive sports can translate to a greater sense of self-worth and accomplishment. Once a person realized they can do something, they start to think what else could I do.

The Range of Activities Offered

Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation offers a wide variety of sports and activities, so there’s something for everyone:

– Winter Sports: MASR is particularly known for our alpine skiing, snowboarding, and Nordic skiing programs. Thanks to specialized adaptive equipment, participants can enjoy the thrill of snow sports, whether they are sitting or standing.

– Summer Activities   The fun doesn’t stop when the snow melts! MASR also offers adaptive cycling, paddle sports (like kayaking and canoeing), hiking, and even golf.

– Veterans’ Programs: MASR runs several programs specifically designed for veterans with disabilities, allowing them to enjoy camaraderie and outdoor sports in a supportive environment. If you are a veteran check out our Veterans No Boundaries program.
