There’s something magic-like about gliding across a serene Maine lake—cool breezes, gentle ripples, and a quiet sense of liberation. That’s exactly what participants in Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation’s paddling program experience each summer. This isn’t just about kayaking—it’s about empowerment, community, and breaking barriers.
What Makes the Paddling Program Special?
- Accessible and inclusive: Life jackets, adaptive kayaks, and gear tailored to participants’ needs are all provided—no need for prior experience.
- Benefits beyond the physical: Participants consistently report gains in confidence, mental well-being, social connection, and quality of life.
Stories from the Water
Ty’s Big Win
A huge win for Ty this season at paddling! After years of paddling in a tandem kayak, this season our team encouraged Ty to push his comfort zone and try a single kayak. He’s been progressing steadily—starting with a tow rope to help him track straight—and yesterday, he reached a milestone. Ty paddled in an intermediate-level kayak with no tow rope all the way past the eagle nest and back with ease. The grin on his face said it all—he was beyond stoked!

Kai’s Speed Run
Kai was all smiles as he took out the kayak generously donated by George Belcher. From the first strokes, Kai earned the nickname “speed demon on water” from Ernie, one of our instructors. He showed impressive power, pacing, and boat control. At one point, Ernie even challenged Kai to paddle with his hands—just to slow him down a bit! The result? Lots of laughs and another great example of the joy and energy paddling can bring.
Why It Matters
Maine Adaptive’s paddling program isn’t just recreational—it’s transformative. It opens doors to nature, wellness, and community for people who face real barriers to access. In a world where inclusion still isn’t the default, this program shines as a beacon of equity and joy.
