Who We Are & What We Do
Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation is a 501c3 non-profit whose mission is to promote year-round education and training for individuals with disabilities in order to develop skills, enhance independence, and provide enjoyment through active recreation. Developing physical strength, self-confidence, and social contacts are just some of the benefits seen when people get involved with Maine Adaptive.
In the winter, we offer alpine and Nordic skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and pickleball. Our summer programming includes paddling, cycling, golf, and mountain biking. In the spring & fall seasons, we offer indoor climbing and pickleball.
Program Details
Maine Adaptive’s internship program provides opportunities to play an integral role in empowering people with permanent disabilities. We offer interns hands-on experience in adaptive program instruction and therapeutic recreation. Other areas of program-related experience may be available.
The length of an Internship may vary according to the needs of Maine Adaptive and the student. That being said, the ideal candidate would be available for two 8-hour days of pre-season training as well as at least one consistent 8-hour day per week throughout the season.
The Intern will be supervised directly by a member of our professional staff. Maine Adaptive staff will coordinate with the student’s academic supervisor to ensure that the time commitment, defined objectives of the experience, and the scope of the intern’s role meet both the student’s needs and the requirements of their program of study.
Interns should:
- have some prior experience working with people with disabilities and/or outdoor recreation
- love working with people
- be open-minded, flexible, and adaptable
- be hard-working and self-motivated
Maine Adaptive expects interns to conduct themselves in a professional manner and one that reflects positively on the program and its staff.
Maine Adaptive internships are unpaid and interns are not covered under Workers Compensation Insurance for accidents or injury. Interns are strongly encouraged to carry medical insurance.
