Veterans No Boundaries Summer Camp Returns to Fernwood Cove for a Weekend of Adventure, Connection, and Family

Media invited to visit Maine Adaptive’s annual camp for disabled veterans and their loved ones on August 22-23.

Newry, Maine – June 23, 2026 – From August 21-24, more than 20 disabled veterans and their families will gather in Harrison, Maine, for a long weekend of connection, community, and adventure at Maine Adaptive’s Veterans No Boundaries (VNB) Summer Camp. Returning to Fernwood Cove on Island Pond for a second year, the camp provides a welcoming setting where veterans and their loved ones can reconnect with the outdoors, each other, and a supportive community. The camp is offered free of charge to disabled veterans and their families.

After a successful first year at Fernwood Cove in 2025, Maine Adaptive is excited to return to the lakeside camp for a second summer. The accessible setting offers the perfect backdrop for adaptive paddling, cycling, fishing, climbing, intuitive horsemanship, laser rifle shooting, campfires, and family-centered recreation. The program creates opportunities for veterans and their loved ones to build confidence, try new activities, and create lasting memories together.

“Our goal is to give veterans and their families a chance to reconnect, recharge, and experience the outdoors together,” said Amy Bannon-Staats, Co-Executive Director of Maine Adaptive. “For many, this camp provides an opportunity to build new connections, rediscover activities they enjoy, and create memories alongside others who understand their experiences.”

For retired Air Force Captain David Coombs, the Veterans No Boundaries program has been transformative.

“The Veterans No Boundaries program through Maine Adaptive has provided me with so many opportunities to experience adaptive sports—skiing, snowshoeing, kayaking, fishing, paddle boarding, pickleball, and adaptive cycling—all within my capabilities, yet I didn’t know until I got the chance to try,” said Coombs. “The camps have been vital to improving my mental and physical health and have helped me grow as a person. I’ve learned new skills, tested my own limits, and most importantly shared these experiences with fellow veterans and my family.”

Established in 2004, Veterans No Boundaries was created to help wounded, injured, and disabled veterans rediscover the benefits of recreation and the outdoors while building camaraderie with others who share similar experiences. What began with just three participants has grown into one of Maine Adaptive’s signature programs, serving veterans and their families throughout the year through adaptive sports, recreation, and specialized camps.

The summer camp in Harrison is one of two annual Veterans No Boundaries camps hosted by Maine Adaptive, complementing the organization’s winter veterans camp and year-round adaptive recreation opportunities.

The program is offered at no cost to participants thanks to the generosity of donors, sponsors, and volunteers who believe in the power of recreation to heal, connect, and inspire.
